Some new laws are in effect in New York to start off 2020.

Breanna’s Law, which is aimed at improving boating safety, requires people to take a state approved safety course before they’re allowed to operate a motorized boat.

The law is named after 11-year-old Breanna Lieneck. She was killed in a boating accident on the Great South Bay in 2005.
