Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation aimed at keeping the fuel flowing the next time the power goes out.
By next April, every gas station within a half-mile radius of a highway exit or evacuation route must have backup power available within 24 hours of a power outage.
Cuomo says gas stations could see up to $10,000 in grants if they choose to install a transfer switch, which helps to accept a portable emergency generator.
The governor says owners could also see up to $13,000 in grants if they choose to install a switch and purchase their own generator.
