A Lindenhurst man who was sleeping outside after Sandy destroyed his house now has a new place to live, thanks to some generous Long Islanders.
News 12 Long Island first reported the story in August, when a neighbor said Charles Burgio was living in his backyard. Burgio's home had been destroyed by Sandy and he had been staying in a hotel until FEMA's funding ran out.
An old friend of Burgio's, Angelo Genova, saw the story and said he felt he had to do something to help his friend. Genova works for A&S Construction, and they've been at work since September, rebuilding Burgio's house. The United Way has put Burgio up in a hotel until his home is completed.
Other Long Islanders also pitched in to help after seeing the story, including a Bay Shore kitchen company that donated new cabinets.
