A New Cassel community rallied Friday night in support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Raise the Age proposal that would raise the age teens can be tried as adults from 16 to 18.
Concerned citizens and lawmakers attended a roundtable discussion on the proposal at the "Yes We Can" Community Center in Westbury. Currently, New York is one of only two states that automatically prosecutes 16- and 17-year-olds as adults.
Cuomo is a strong proponent of Raise the Age and is currently working to pass legislation ahead of the April budget deadline. As it reads, the bill would allow 16- and 17-year-olds to be processed as juveniles for nonviolent crimes while offering additional rehabilitation support.
Assemblyman Joe Saladino emphasizes that he's not against the proposed legislation, but wants to make sure it is interpreted just as it's written.
Some who attended the meeting say they will be traveling to Albany in March to further support Raise the Age.
