The mental health of first responders is getting some extra thought from officials.
A new bipartisan legislation put forward by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand will establish a national mental health hotline and expand access to mental health care for law enforcement officers.
First responders face higher rates of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and depression than civilians, but their mental health needs are often unaddressed.
Law enforcement officers are also more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty.
