A long-anticipated plan to construct a massive $3 billion medical facility on Nassau Community College's campus will not move forward.
"The parties mutually agree to pause further negotiations as a result of external factors that have presented issues that may prove to be too burdensome to overcome," Blakeman's Director of Communications Chris Boyle said in a statement.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman's office full statement:
"After many months of working diligently to pursue an agreement for a new hospital campus for NYU Langone at Nassau Community College, the parties mutually agree to pause further negotiations as a result of external factors that have presented issues that may prove to be too burdensome to overcome. NYU Langone has assured County Executive Blakeman of their continued commitment to the delivery of excellent healthcare services to the residents of Nassau County. County Executive Blakeman would like to thank Ken Langone and Bob Grossman for the opportunity to explore this and other opportunities."
A spokesperson for NYU Langone told News 12 in a statement: "Despite our best efforts to work through a number of technical issues, we are unable to proceed with this specific location."
NYU Langone's full statement:
"Since May 2023, we have been actively working with local officials and other key stakeholders to develop a new, state-of-the-art, integrated academic medical center on Long Island that would expand access to NYU Langone Health’s world class care there. We had originally hoped this could be built on the campus of Nassau Community College in Uniondale. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to work through a number of technical issues, we are unable to proceed with this specific location. We are thankful to Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman for his efforts to support this project.
Our commitment to expanding our presence on Long Island has not changed. We are actively exploring multiple alternative sites for a new medical center to serve Long Island. We remain dedicated to the project as originally envisioned: one that would include a teaching hospital, medical education, and a research facility."
Neither the county nor the hospital elaborated on what issues caused the deal to fall apart.
"What is a technical issue?" Nassau County resident Steve Madonna asked. "It sounds like some type of excuse."
Nassau Community College Community Relations Vice President Jerry Kornbluth said the school is still fighting for the deal.
"It is our profound hope that the parties involved in the negotiations could revisit and come back and have discussions about the project," he said.
In 2023, NYU Langone, the county and the college began negotiations to construct the state-of-the-art facility on 45 acres of Nassau Community College. During commencement that year, Blakeman said the cutting-edge facility would create "the number one hospital in America."
The project was expected to create thousands of jobs.
"I've had to go all the way down to Winthrop, and Winthrop can get very busy," Westbury resident Kristin Hellmann said. "Their ER and everything can get very busy so I think having an extra hospital would be beneficial."
A spokesperson for NYU Langone said they are dedicated to moving forward with the project as originally envisioned which would include a teaching hospital, medical education and research facility.
The health system said it is "actively exploring multiple alternative sites for a new medical center to serve Long Island." Officials did not elaborate on where those locations could be.
