What began as a routine call for police in Westbury early Monday morning quickly turned into a delivery these officers will never forget.
Police say officers responded to a 35-year-old woman in active labor around 2:30 a.m. When they arrived at the home, there was no time to get her to the hospital.
With assistance from police medics, officers helped deliver a healthy baby girl inside the residence. Medics cut the umbilical cord, stimulated the newborn and provided additional care to the mother. Both were later taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
“Mom is doing very well,” said Aaron Tomlinson, a police medic supervisor. “We coached her through the delivery, and she was very glad to know that she had a healthy baby girl crying, and her husband did a great job staying calm with us as well.”
Tomlinson said the officers were prepared and trained for a moment like this and are grateful both mother and baby are healthy.
