Officials from across Long Island are asking its residents to double down on their efforts to stay home as snow falls.
"We want to make sure if people can stay off the roads, please do stay off the roads for your own safety, the safety of others who have to be on the roads. And of course, so our crews and the municipalities, the other municipalities, their crews can clear the roads," says Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.
Curran is also advising local business owners not to move snow into the roads.
Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone says his county's 200 plows are hitting the roads during the storm in the hope of keeping the roads clear. But with heavy snow concentrating in the northwest portion of the county and possibly a snow-rain mix along the South Shore, the cleanup will be challenging.
"Prepare to hunker down for a little while, because this storm will start to really significantly pick up," says Bellone
PSEGLI is under significant scrutiny for its response after its communications failures during Tropical Storm Isaias. The power company has brought in mutual aid crews from as far away as Tennessee to help deal with downed lines.
Curran says her emergency operations center is working with PSEGLI to react to power outages faster and says 90 plow and salt trucks are working to keep roads clean.
