The Nassau County Legislature voted Monday to install cameras at dozens of intersections to catch drivers who speed past red lights.
Lawmakers hope the cameras will deter people from speeding up at yellow lights and going through red ones.
?I think for pedestrian and driver safety, red light cameras are going to be an asset for us,? says Leg. Wayne Wink (D-Roslyn). ?It really prevents those serious T-bone accidents that are the most likely to be fatal and to be life-threatening.?
The intersection at Wantagh Avenue and Old Jerusalem Road, right across from MacArthur High School, is one of about 50 Nassau intersections where cameras are set to be installed by late summer.
The $50 tickets will be mailed to the vehicle's owner. If they aren?t paid in six weeks, the car owner faces a $25 late fee.
Suffolk legislators are also expected to pass a measure to install red light cameras this summer.
