Nassau's Department of Social Services giveth and then taketh away. The agency is evicting nearly a dozen people from a Hempstead home it had placed there in violation of village housing codes.
Village of Hempstead code bars homeowners from renting rooms to more than three people. However, DSS placed 11 previously homeless residents in Desiree Wright's house at the same time.
DSS told the tenants in a letter that the agency will stop paying their rent at Wright's house next month.
Once he's evicted, Stanley Korowski said he'll "probably go back on the street, back living on the street again."
After 15 years running the home, Wright said she might put it up for sale.
"I am not a bad person," she said. "I am here to help homeless people."
DSS said it identified seven other houses in violation of Hempstead housing codes. Officials said those tenants will be relocated.
