Police in Nassau and Suffolk counties say extra security precautions are in place in the wake of the mass shooting in Orlando.

Officials say there are no specific threats against Long Island, but authorities are urging the public to be vigilant for suspicious activity.

Suffolk Police Commissioner Timothy Sini says officers will have an enhanced presence at LGBT centers, pride festivals and cafes across the county, including on Fire Island.

In Nassau, officials say they are also intensifying patrols in and around the LGBT community, and at other locations throughout the county.

"Whether they are malls, whether they are schools, we work them each and every day in case of a worst-case scenario," says Acting Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter. "You never know where a soft target will emerge. You never know what they're going to target."

As News 12 has reported, 49 people were killed and 53 others were injured when a gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando. It marked the deadliest mass shooting in the nation's history.
