Nassau County police have announced that they will begin stepping up security on Long Island in wake of the bombings in Brussels.
Among the security measures to keep residents safe, officials are increasing police patrols, monitoring social media, and are purchasing high-powered rifles.
Police say they've also increased aviation patrols and chemical and biological detection equipment.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano says residents can make a difference in keeping families and neighbors safe by reporting suspicious social media activity such as radical allegiance claims and threats.
In addition, Mangano says if you see an unattended package or a backpack or someone trying to enter a restricted area, you are encouraged to call 911.
Suffolk police also tell News 12 their officers are remaining extra vigilant with more patrols in the wake of of the Brussels.
