The chairman of the Nassau Board of Assessors is advising residents to understand tax terms before voting on school budgets next week.
Harvey Levinson says forms mailed out to homeowners may be confusing, which he says is done on purpose so that taxpayers will approve the budget. Then, he says, the tax might be higher when final bills arrive in October. Levinson also says he is shocked that some school districts are not releasing their school tax rates, so he has prepared the tax rate for every school district ahead of the budget votes.
Some school districts point the finger at Levinson for the confusion, since he and the legislature finalize the tax rate in August. East Meadow Deputy Superintendent Leon Campo says Levinson is pressuring certain school districts to explain to taxpayers what is being done, rather than explaining what Levinson himself is doing to them.
