Police met with Nassau County school officials Thursday to alert them of the alarming rise in heroin use among Long Island teenagers.
Police say heroin today is much more potent than it was a few years ago and is easily accessible to teenagers, especially at school.
"If it was just one child, it's a problem,? Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey says. ?We're seeing narcotics detectives buying heroin every week in Nassau County."
Seaford Union Free School District Assistant Superintendent Brian Conboy says educators and parents need to address the issue with both middle school students and high school students. East Meadow High School Principal Mark Scher, however, says abuse of pharmaceuticals is the greater danger to his community.
Most of the heroin-related cases in Nassau come from Massapequa, Seaford, Wantagh and Hicksville, police say. There were 150 heroin possession arrests across the county last year.
Meanwhile, police arrested four Suffolk teens Wednesday night on heroin charges.
