Trick-or-treating will look a bit different this year due to the coronavirus, but as Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, it will go on.
In response, Nassau County released guidance to residents on how to stay safe and celebrate Halloween during the pandemic.
The county is recommending trick-or-treating with face masks -- not just Halloween masks -- and to keep good distance between others when trick-or-treating.
Officials say homeowners should consider giving out prepackaged treat bags instead of using a group candy bowl.
Most importantly, those celebrating Halloween are being advised to avoid large gatherings that are indoors, like a party that could potentially be a "super spreader" event.
However, officials say outdoor events like corn mazes, pumpkin picking, socially distanced hay rides or even the spooky drive-thru at Stew Leonard's in East Meadow are safe.
"We know that the upticks that we've had come from social gatherings parties where people are not wearing masks and social distancing. So, I'm not worried about Halloween when people are following proper guidance. I'm worried if there are parties where people are not following the proper guidance and so that's a message we keep giving. If you're going to have a family gathering, and you're going to have multiple families, you should still wear masks, you don't have to sit right next to each other and you should socially distance," says Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein, Nassau County health commissioner.
