Republicans say the map approved by majority Republicans in 2013 is familiar to voters and should be kept as whole. Democrats say the map keeps minority communities separate.

The Nassau Legislature has given preliminary approval to two maps - one Democrat and one Republican.
The new Legislature took over the process after a bipartisan advisory committee deadlocked in a November vote.
Republicans say the map approved by majority Republicans in 2013 is familiar to voters and should be kept as whole.
Democrats say the map keeps minority communities separate.
The Republican-controlled legislature must approve a final map by March. The next hearing date has not been announced.
