A new proposal in Nassau County is hoping to honor a local humanitarian.
Legislator Arnold Drucker unveiled a bill to designate July 16 as Harry Chapin Day.
The late singer-songwriter and activist founded Long Island's first food bank--Long Island Cares.
Chapin was focused on fighting food insecurity in his community.
"Harry Chapin did not see access to healthy nutritious food as a privilege," Drucker says. "He saw it as a basic human right."
The proposal would have Nassau County partner with Long Island Cares and other organizations to hold an annual food drive.
Drucker always wants to celebrate Chapin's legacy by raising ongoing awareness of food insecurity in the area.
