Nassau lawmakers unanimously passed an amended $2.9 billion budget for 2015 without increasing taxes, as was proposed by County Executive Ed Mangano earlier this year.
The budget calls for recovering the value of bond premiums and restructuring debt. It also slashes $50,000 in funds for a Freeport food pantry, one of Nassau's largest.
In a letter to lawmakers sent Tuesday, NIFA head Jon Kaiman threatened to cut $31 million from the county's budget if lawmakers didn't approve a 3.1 percent property tax hike.
Nassau Legislature Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves (R - East Meadow) says a tax hike was not necessary and that the budget can be balanced with a much smaller cut.
"Mr. Kaiman should have communicated with us before he issued this draconian letter," said Gonsalves.
The budget also includes an additional $1 million for mental health funding aimed at addressing the heroin epidemic in the county.
