If Nassau lawmakers get their way, Big Brother will be watching and ticketing drivers who run red lights.
At a news conference in Mineola, Executive Tom Suozzi (D-Nassau) announced he is asking the state for permission to install surveillance cameras at the county's most dangerous intersections. The cameras would record drivers who pass through red lights. After tracking the person down through the license plate, the county would then mail out tickets. Suffolk officials made the same request to Albany last month.
Nassau officials said the need for the red light cameras is clear. Between 2000 and 2005, there were 382 accidents at the intersection of Merrick Avenue and Old Country Road in Westbury alone. They said several other intersections warrant consideration.
Despite the $150,000 per camera price tag, Suozzi estimates it would be worthwhile investment. Besides potentially saving lives, he said the red light tickets would generate about $7 million in new revenue.
