Nassau Republicans are planning to cut the proposed public safety fee that would have tacked an additional $105 onto all parking and traffic tickets issued in the county to $55.
The fee would only apply to traffic tickets, not parking fines. Lawmakers are hoping the fee will raise $30 million.
County Executive Ed Mangano put forth the proposal in September and said it would raise $64 million for the cash-strapped county.
The Nassau Legislature recently approved the county budget, but lawmakers shelved a vote on the public safety fee.
"Despite the criticisms of the Democrat minority, who have offered no solutions whatsoever, cutting this fee is the right thing to do for Nassau County residents," Legislature Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves said in a statement.
Republicans are also proposing an amnesty program for businesses with unpaid property taxes. It would offer a 25 percent discount on what is owed if the taxes are paid within 60 days. In a phone interview, Democratic Legislator Carrie Solages said the GOP's plans are simply gimmicks that may not fill the $77 million budget gap.
Republicans say the fee would not include parking tickets. Democrats are expecting the proposal to be brought up during the meeting of the full Legislature on Monday. NIFA, the county's fiscal watchdog, must also approve the budget.
