Nassau criticized for rap video filmed at jail
Nassau County is facing criticism for renting out a part of the county jail for a rap video.
In August, the county rented an unused section of the jail to Brooklyn rapper Uncle Murda, hitting a sour note with Nassau County Correction Officers Benevolent Association President John Jaronczyk.
"The content of it is disturbing," he said, referring to the music video. Jaronczyk is particularly upset because he said officers didn't know that they were going to be featured in the background of the video.
"I want to see them remove the video so my officers are no long appearing in the video -- at least remove the scenes that show my officers," said Jaronczyk.
Jaronczyk said the county was irresponsible to rent the jail to Uncle Murda, who has a criminal record.
The rapper, along with rapper Maino, released another video last week that depicts a gun being held to a white police officer's head; the lyrics call for justice for Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
"That's a slap in the face to every law enforcement officer in this country," said Jaronczyk.
That video wasn't shot at Nassau County Jail.
According to the Daily News, Nassau County charged producers $570 for the one-day shoot at its jail. Long Islanders expressed mixed opinions about the video.
"Doesn't make sense to me," said Ed Ruff, of Hicksville. "For $500-something -- bad move on our part and Ed Mangano. It's the wrong thing to do." Mangano is the Nassau County executive.
"People in an organized type of movement can say what they want to as long as they're not hurting people," said Mark Stanwycks, of Levittown.
contacted Nassau County officials, but hasn't received a response.
Jaronczyk plans to write a letter to producers of the video to request that Nassau County officers be edited out of the video that was shot at the county jail.
