A veteran Nassau County police officer has been hospitalized after he was injured trying to apprehend a suspect.

Officials say four special operations officers were looking for robbery suspect Muhammad Ali yesterday afternoon in Fresh Meadows, Queens. Inspector Kenneth Lack says Ali is wanted on a first-degree robbery charge in Hicksville from three days ago.

Police say they saw Ali entering a vehicle on Wexford Terrace. They say he then violently resisted arrest by pinning the 46-year-old officer between his vehicle and a police cruiser. Lack says another police officer fired two shots at the car, one of which hit Ali in the chest. Ali was taken to Jamaica Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The officer was taken to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, where he's alert and conscious.
