Nassau police are cracking down on cars with illegally tinted windows.
Cops say 70 percent of visible sunlight must be transmitted through the window, and that dark tinting compromises their safety. They say tinted windows prevent them from seeing inside, when a driver may be armed and dangerous. Police say the tinting also affects HOV lanes during rush hours. They say cars in which the number of occupants cannot be determined will be pulled over whether they are driving legally or not.
Many residents say they are unaware of the regulations and have no idea if they are breaking the law. Drivers have 24 hours to correct the violation or face a $50 fine for the first infraction.
