Nassau police officers are among the highest paid in the nation, but don?t even work a full 40-hours a week to get that salary. To help balance the new $2.4 billion spending plan, County Executive Tom Suozzi says police officers should be putting in more than their contractual 36.6 hours a week. Suozzi wants officers and detectives to work a 40-hour week and contribute a small percentage of their salaries toward their health insurance. The estimated savings for taxpayers would be $25 million. Gary DelaRaba, head of the Nassau Police Benevolent Association, says talk of saving $25 million is just that -- talk. He says now that Suozzi is back from losing the Democratic Primary for governor he is going after his favorite target -- the police. The 2007 proposal is Suozzi?s fourth consecutive no-tax-increase budget.
