Nassau Consumer Affairs is warning shoppers of gold jewelry that may not be up to par.
A study testing more than 40 gold charms purchased throughout the county found that 27 failed to contain the amount of gold indicated. Officials say 11 stores failed, including Babylon Jewelers. Owner John Dabis blames his suppliers in Manhattan and says there is no way he can independently test each piece of jewelry in the store.
Cecelia Gardner, of the Jeweler?s Vigilance Committee, says store owners must partake in some form of quality assurance. She says at least some pieces of jewelry must be tested. Experts advise consumers to check for karat and manufacturers stamps and purchase only from a reputable jeweler.
