Some Nassau lawmakers are introducing a new bill Monday aimed at keeping convicted sex offenders away from children. The bill would put restrictions on where convicted sex offenders could live. Currently, sex offenders must register with the state. Under the new legislation offenders would not be able to live within 1,000 feet of a school or 500 feet of a playground. While many lawmakers are in favor of the bill, officials from the New York Civil Liberties Union say the bill would drive the offenders underground and they may be more likely to commit the crime again.The full Legislature must pass the bill before it can be sent to the county executive for approval.
