Nassau Community College was placed on probation Tuesday by its accrediting agency, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
The agency's website states that the college is on probation because it is out of compliance with seven of the 14 standards, including integrity, planning and financial resources and stable leadership.
The school has been in turmoil for years while trying to find new leadership. Farmingdale State President Hubert Keen will take over at NCC in August.
In an email to the college community, interim President Thomas Dolan said, "The Middle States probation action places extensive demands on this institution, and it deserves a close read and careful consideration. The list of expectations is daunting, especially in light of a very short timeframe directed for compliance."
The Middle States Commission on Higher Education gives schools up to two years to correct any problem areas.
The secretary for the full-time faculty teacher's union says they are calling for an outside consultant to work with them to bring them back into compliance.
