With summer dwindling down, people are trying to get the most out of their Labor Day weekend - but police want to make sure residents have safety at the front of their minds.
Nassau police's marine bureau will be increasing patrols to detect impaired boat operators and monitoring all waterways for reckless behavior as part of Operation Safe Boating.
When it comes to lifejackets aboard boats, there must be enough for each person on board, and children 12 years old and younger are required to wear one at all times.
Suffolk police say 42 people were arrested for driving while intoxicated on Labor Day weekend last year.
When it comes to vehicles on land, both police departments will be enhancing patrols over the weekend. The repercussions are the same whether in a boat or a car.
"If somebody is impaired or under the influence and operating a boat, they can be subject to arrest and court proceedings," says Nassau Marine Bureau Lt. Adam Fischer.
There will also be targeted action against underage drinking, with officers monitoring social media pages for information about house parties.
