A Long Island nanny is in a medically induced coma after risking her life to save the baby she was watching in Rockville Centre.
An SUV hit the 62-year-old woman while she was pushing a baby in a stroller on Hempstead Avenue near St. Agnes Cathedral School Thursday afternoon.
Police say she was crossing Hempstead Avenue with a 9-month-old boy. The SUV, driven by a 75-year-old woman, came around the corner from North Village Avenue. The nanny pushed the boy and stroller to safety, but the vehicle ran her down.
Anthony Galvan, who witnessed the accident, says the nanny took the brunt of the hit and saved the child, but she ended up pinned underneath the SUV.
Galvan and other witnesses say about 20 people helped lift the car to pull the victim free, but she was unconscious, bleeding and struggling to breathe.
Police say the driver stayed at the scene and is not facing charges at this time.
