A North Massapequa man was honored for 70 years of service to his community's firehouse.
The only time Fred Penna stepped away from volunteering at the North Massapequa Fire Department was when he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
The 87-year-old has no plans of slowing down just yet. He said he was at a drill just Tuesday night with fellow volunteers.
He offered advice for other firefighters.
"The first life you have to protect is your own because if you go, there is no help for anybody else," he said.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano presented Penna a citation this month for his service. Penna's wife of over 60 years was by his side. They have three children together.
Penna says his goal now is to get to 75 years of service.
