Suffolk County police say an 11-year-old boy is in very critical condition after being shot in the face in a North Bellport home Monday afternoon.
Authorities say Jeffrey Langhorne, a fifth grader at Frank J. Long Elementary School, was sitting at the kitchen table at the Provost Avenue home when three shots were fired from outside the home around 1:30 p.m. One of the bullets hit the boy. Police and K-9 units descended on the home to look for clues.
The boy?s family rushed him to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital instead of waiting for an ambulance. He was then transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he remains with a possible spinal cord injury.
Fifteen pit bulls were removed from the North Bellport home during the investigation. A separate probe has been launched regarding the dogs.
Police say they are pursuing several leads and would not release information on any sort of motive.
