The defense painted a former Muttontown housekeeper who claimed to have been enslaved as a gold-digger in testimony Monday.
The 47-year-old Indonesian woman known as Enung admitted on the stand that she wrote letters while she worked for the couple promising money to people who helped Enung marry rich, even though she is already married. The letters also talked about getting a witchdoctor to make her boss, Mahender Sabhnani, fall in love with her.
Mahender and his wife Varsha Sabhnani are accused of abusing their two housekeepers. Enung told the court although she was not abused as much as the other housekeeper, she was still grateful to see police at the home in May.
Testimony will resume around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The judge chose the late start rather than replacing a juror who asked permission to attend his father-in-law's funeral.
