MTA speaks out against proposed funding cuts by Congress
The MTA spoke out today against proposed funding cuts from Congress.
A bill under consideration in Congress would strip the MTA of more than a billion in guaranteed funds from the federal government.
Officials say that instead of having the guaranteed money, they would have to fight with other agencies for the money; a move they say could lead to service reductions and fare increases.
MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota also says in no uncertain terms that fares will go up if funding is decreased.
Transit advocates say the plan could put a halt to the East Side Access project that will bring LIRR trains into Grand Central Terminal.
