The Metropolitan Transportation Authority released more details about its doomsday budget for 2009 Tuesday, including lists of proposed maximum hikes on fares and tolls.
The MTA must close a projected $1.2 billion shortfall next year. It says Long Island Rail Road fares could go up by 29 percent and Long Island Bus fares could increase as much as 75 percent. On top of that, routes like the N51, N53, N65, N67, N80 and N87 in Nassau could be axed altogether.
A single New York City subway and bus ride could go from $2 to $3, and the MTA is already looking at raising the cost of monthly and weekly MetroCards. Tolls on MTA-operated bridges and tunnels could go up to $7.
The hikes are not set in stone though. State lawmakers could still approve funding recommendations suggested by the Ravitch Commission, which called for more modest changes.
The MTA will hold eight public hearings to discuss its plans. The first will be held Jan. 14.
