The MTA board
voted Wednesday to approve new discount fares for LIRR riders.
The agency says
since the pandemic, ridership is down by almost half of what it was in 2019
with more people working from home.
Agency officials
hope the discounted program will bring commuters back.
The discounted pilot program, set
to launch in March, would give riders a 10% discount on monthly tickets, 20%
off a new 20-trip tickets and a flat $5 fare on
all weekday trips within New York City.
The pilot program
will begin March 1 and last for at least four months, but it could be extended
or made permanent.
