Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that he is aiming for 100% compliance for mask wearing on board all commuter trains and buses in New York City – those who aren’t wearing masks will face a $50 fine.
MTA Chairman Patrick Foye made the announcement during a call-in briefing. He said that compliance is already in the 90% range for the Long Island Rail Road, city buses, subways and Metro-North.
MTA police will oversee enforcing the fines to those who refuse to wear a mask. The action takes effect on Monday.
“Our train crews – their key role is to ensure safe train operations and that's what we're going to ask them to keep doing,” said LIRR president Phillip Eng. “It's similar to any other infraction…the train crew can call ahead, and police will step on the train and address the situation.”
Gov. Cuomo says the announcement coincides with increased public transportation ridership post-Memorial Day. Eng says ridership on the LIRR has increased, but only to about 28% of its normal level.
He says no employees have tested positive for COVID-19 since Aug. 20.
