An 18-year-old from Mt. Sinai was charged with manslaughter after police say she brought her dead baby to the hospital in a knapsack.
According to police, Zehra Catalbas gave birth on Saturday in the shower. After two hours she went to Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson with the dead baby seeking medical attention for afterbirth complications. Autopsy results show the baby was born alive and the cause of death was asphyxia.
Police charged Catalbas with second-degree manslaughter because they say she didn?t seek medical treatment at the time of birth. Police say Catalbas was hiding the pregnancy from her family.
