An MS-13 gang member was sentenced today to life in prison for the murder of a mother and her toddler.

Herberto Martinez was sentenced to life plus 60 years in prison.

Martinez was found guilty in the deaths of five people, including 19-year-old Vanessa Argueta and her son, Diego. Prosecutors say the pair was killed execution-style after Argueta befriended a rival gang member.

Prosecutors say the young boy was killed because gang members were worried he would seek revenge for his mother's death.

According to police, Martinez and another man, Carlos Ortega, were behind a string of murders on Long Island and in Queens.

The judge says Martinez placed less value on human lives than he did on enforcing the barbaric rules of MS-13.
