The mother of one of five slain teens in Brentwood spoke exclusively with News 12 Long Island, saying the school has not done enough to keep students safe.
Kayla Cuevas, 16, and her friend Nisa Mickens, 15, were found beaten and slashed in September. Police say gang members are responsible for their deaths. Law enforcement sources say MS-13 is suspected in the murders.
More bodies were found in Brentwood in the following weeks.
In the two months since Kayla's killing, Evelyn Rodriguez says no safety measures have been taken at the high school. She says she complained to the school board for two years about her daughter being bullied and harassed.
"There is no intervention, there is no meeting to see what was the problem," she told News 12. "I don't understand where this went wrong."
Rodriguez says she wants to see updated security cameras, more social workers at the school and upgraded metal detectors to replace the one she says no longer work.
She also says she wants the district to remove children from school that have criminal records.
The Brentwood Schools superintendent told News 12 last month that the board is doing everything it can to keep students safe, even dipping into an emergency fund to put more security guards in place.
