More than 1,000 participants turned out for Port Jefferson?s 14th Annual Families Walk for Hope event benefiting the Fortunato Breast Health Center at Mather Hospital Saturday. Families walked five miles in memory of breast cancer victims or to celebrate survivors. Many survivors also took part. Last year, the Fortunato Breast Health Center treated over 9,000 women with the disease, proof that breast cancer is devastating families across Long Island and the United States. Dr. Kenneth Roberts of Mather Hospital said one in seven will be diagnosed with breast cancer in northern Brookhaven; a higher statistic than that of the entire U.S. Organizers expect the walk raised more than $140,000, which will be used for education, treatment and new diagnostic equipment. After they walked, participants were treated to massages and music from a band composed of doctors and nurses.
