More New Yorkers could soon qualify for savings on their utility bills under an expanded state assistance program.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced today that New York's Energy Affordability Program is expanding to include more working families.
Under the changes, a single person earning up to $113,000 a year and a family of four earning up to $162,000 may qualify for savings of up to $500 annually on their utility bills.
"If you receive benefits like SNAP, Medicaid or SSI you just have to apply, but even if you don't get those benefits don't assume you are not eligible," Hochul said. "We just raised the income threshold dramatically."
State officials say the goal is to help New Yorkers afford essentials such as rent, groceries and medicine while reducing monthly energy costs.
Separately, Hochul announced that 8.2 million New Yorkers could begin receiving one-time energy rebate checks in the mail as soon as next week.
