The Westbury School District will hire an ombudsman to oversee enrollment in response to a review by the state Attorney General's Office.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman was investigating complaints that between 2012 and 2015, the district denied enrollment to numerous students from Central and South America. Schneiderman says Westbury also had an "unwritten policy" of diverting students 16 and older who could not speak English into non-degree programs.
The district said in a statement that it was among 20 districts reviewed by Schneiderman's office, and says it has "every intention of respecting the rights of its students and applicants while fulfilling its responsibilities to its taxpayers."
The statement says that in addition to hiring an ombudsman, the district will take other steps that include revising enrollment procedures and training its staff.
