The mother of a teenage girl allegedly killed by her father says she wants to see the suspected gunman dead.
Authorities say 39-year-old Abdool Zaman killed his daughter Vanessa in Virginia.
Vanessa graduated from Amityville High School in June and moved to Orlando, Florida, in October to live with her father. The two had recently reconnected. Saveeta Barnes, Vanessa's mother, says her daughter realized when she arrived that Zaman was abusing his 18-year-old girlfriend.
"The girl had a baby with him," says Barnes, of Massapequa. "She wanted to protect the baby and the girl, and Vanessa took them and ran away with them."
Authorities say Zaman shot and killed both girls after following them to a relative's house in Virginia. They say he fled to Queens, where he was arrested following the double slaying.
In Queens court Friday, Zaman's legal aid attorney said Zaman waived his appearance. He also fought extradition to Virginia. The prosecutor said authorities in Virginia are preparing a governor's warrant, which would force Zaman to return to Virginia to stand trial.
"I want to see him dead," Barnes says. "Hopefully he gets the death penalty. That's what he deserves."
Barnes says she remembers her daughter as a bubbly, loving and funny person who was a creative writer and liked to travel. She says she tried to convince Vanessa not to go to Florida.
Zaman continues to be held without bail. His attorney did not want to comment.
Another court date in Queens is set for Feb. 28.
