A New Cassel mother was stabbed to death Thursday just months after she was allegedly kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend.
Police say 24-year-old Joanna Bird was killed in a house on Grand Boulevard in New Cassel. Bird had an order of protection against her ex-boyfriend, Leonardo Valdez-Cruz, who is accused of kidnapping her at gunpoint in January.
Bird's friends say Valdez-Cruz continued to harass the woman even after the arrest. In January, News 12 Long Island reported Valdez-Cruz allegedly tried to kidnap her. He was arrested after allegedly forcing her to drive him into town where he pulled out a gun and threatened to kill her.
Bird?s mother Sharon Dorsett blames police and prosecutors for her daughter?s death. Prosecutors say the charges against Valdez-Cruz were dropped when Bird refused to cooperate with the investigation. Her family says prosecutors should have continued with the case anyway, even though Bird was too frightened to testify.
Bird?s family says law enforcement had another chance to put Valdez-Cruz behind bars. They say police were called to the Grand Boulevard home on Wednesday because Valdez-Cruz was harassing Bird and violating the terms of an order of protection against him.
The family says police told Valdez-Cruz that they wouldn?t arrest him if he would leave the house, which he apparently did.
Police are not saying if Valdez-Cruz is a suspect in the murder.
