Some Orchard Beach patrons are having an easier time enjoying the beach thanks to the installation of special "mobi-mats."
The Department of Parks and Recreation recently installed the mats at four city beaches to help disabled and elderly beachgoers better move from the boardwalk to the sand. The mats are secured to the sand with 14-inch staples. The surface lets individuals roll their wheelchairs, or other devices, over the sand for easier access to the beach.
Mother Sabrina Piscitelli praised the mats, saying she doesn't have to dredge through the sand with a stroller and baby.
The mats, which will remain through Labor Day, cost the city $130,000 to install.
