Crews were out Sunday searching in the air and on the waters of the Great South Bay for a missing boater whose damaged craft has been recovered.
Police say 48-year-old Andrew Weis, an experienced boater and swimmer, left Gilgo Beach in an inflatable motorized dinghy around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
He was supposed to meet his girlfriend at the Anchorage Yacht Club in Lindenhurst, but he never made it.
Suffolk police found Weis' damaged craft Sunday on the docks of the Venetian Shores park.
Investigators say there is evidence the dinghy was struck by something or involved in a boating accident. They believe someone had pulled the craft out of the water and onto the dock, but they're not sure who may have done that at this time.
Police say they hope surveillance video will yield more clues. In the meantime, the Coast Guard, police and others have been combing the bay for Weis.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Coast Guard at 631-661-9100.
