The Town of Islip Animal Shelter in Bay Shore announced today that the dog found in a West Islip dumpster, who has been named Miracle, is now ready for adoption.

The 1-year-old Lhasa Apso was found in a dumpster on Christmas Eve. An employee from the shelter, Michael Papini, was seen on security video tossing the dog inside. He has since been charged.

Town of Islip officials say they're now accepting adoption applications. An adoption committee, including SPCA members and officials from the animal shelter, will screen the potential adopters over the next two weeks.

Under current agricultural law, animal abuse carries a maximum prison term of two years. If abuse were to be placed under the criminal code, it would be classified as a D felony, carrying a prison time of up to seven years.
