The attorney of a black Miller Place man found guilty of fatally shooting a white teen plans to appeal the conviction, he said Sunday.
The jury found John White guilty Saturday night of second-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon in the 2006 shooting death of Daniel Cicciaro Jr., 17. White argued that he shot the teen who was in a "lynch mob" looking for his son, Aaron White, at his home.
"This jury has tried to erase 400 years of history," said defense attorney Fred Brewington. He was referring to the history of blacks in America and how that affected White's state of mind during the incident.
Brewington called the verdict a disappointment for all blacks.
He also said jurors went from being deadlocked to making a speedy decision after the judge asked them what religious obligations they had Sunday.
Cicciaro's family members gathered Sunday holding pictures of the victim and waving a sign thanking jurors. "Their decision was the same as ours, that race didn't play a part in this," said Joanne Cicciaro, the victim's mother.
White will remain out on bail until his Feb. 21 sentencing.
