Mill Basin residents tell News12 they've been dealing with the same issues for years now — random vehicles parked on their residential block for months at a time.
From commercial trucks to vans - and at one point, a trailer for housing - was found parked on E. 59th Street.
Residents said the illegal parking problem has gotten worse since the pandemic, and that's not the only issue.
“A lot of people come here to just dump something,” said Mark Jackier, who has lived in Fillmore Gardens co-op for more than 50 years. “Just within the last year or two is the first time we’ve ever had to complain about rats. Most of these cars, nobody has any idea who these people are.”
The office of Council member Mercedes Narcisse, who represents the district, tells News 12 that they have often been in contact with police on the issue. They’re told that a lack of tow trucks is limiting the response.
While reporting on the scene, a driver of at least two of the trucks parked there at the time told a News 12 reporter that he moves the trucks every few days. At least one of those trucks was moved while News 12 was there.
Residents are adamant that he’ll be back - if not someone else.
“It's a growing situation that has to be taken care of now,” said Carol Gabory, a resident of 22 years. “I just don’t know who to call.”
DSNY said they removed nearly 13,000 derelict and abandoned vehicles in 2024 alone, and those efforts will continue.
DSNY released a statement saying:
"We investigated the area last night. We found one vehicle without plates that we have tagged for removal if it goes unclaimed. We also found roughly six vehicles with questionable plates. As this would fall under NYPD jurisdiction, we have requested they investigate."
