A Long Island vineyard and a wood shop came together to honor area veterans and Gold Star families.
Del Vino Vineyards in Northport presented 11 military families and two Gold Star families with a custom American flag that was handmade at Long Island-based Gians Wood Shop.
Among those honored were veterans from all military branches -- including 91-year-old John Gatto, a U.S. Marine, and 92-year-old Jack Vogt, of the U.S. Army, who served in the Korean War.
Flags were presented in honor of Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan B. Bruckenthal and Chief Warrant Officer John William Engeman.
Both Bruckenthal and Engeman were Northport and East Northport residents, respectively. Bruckenthal was a United States Coast Guardsman who was killed in Iraq in 2004. His parents were present to receive the flag.
Engeman was killed in action in Bagdad in 2006. His sister Patti and brother-in-law were present for his flag.
"Independence Day is, most of all, an opportunity to reflect on the bravery, courage, foresight, and genius of those who drafted The Declaration of Independence. After all these years, the message continues to resonate with how being an American is a deeply felt commitment to higher principles: liberty, equality, opportunity, and self-governance," stated Lisa Giachetti, owner of Del Vino Vineyards.
